* YOU CANT MAKE A DIFFERENCE, RIGHT. Your correct if you think that way, but truth is, chage is easy and it will make a huge difference.

Is leaving my computer on overnight really environmentally damaging?
Consider this: electricity is still produced predominantly from fossil fuels. In the U.S., the mix is about 50% from coal, 20% natural gas, and the rest from hydroelectric, nuclear, and in last place, renewable energy. Therefore:
* Leaving just one computer switched on every night for a year releases the same amount of CO2 as burning 18 gallons of gasoline
* Leaving 10 computers on overnight requires over 40 tree seedlings grown for 10 years to absorb the resulting carbon dioxide
* The greenhouse gas emissions avoided by switching off 100 computers that are normally left on overnight are the same as recycling nearly 6 tons of waste instead of sending it to landfill
* In total, the climate benefit of switching off office workstations when they are not needed would be the same as preserving over 250 acres of forest from deforestation - every year.
Computer energy savings
1. Currently, the average office workstation is on for 115 hours per week. The target value is 60 hours. That's a potential saving of 55 hours per week.
2. An average workstation uses 90 Watts (W). 90W x 55 hours/week = 4,950 Watthours (Wh) per week of potential energy savings.
3. 4,950Wh/week x 52 weeks = 257,400Wh/year = 257.4 kWh/year 4. With some 200,000 workstations, 257.4 kWh/year x 200,000 = 51,480,000 kWh / year Lightbulbs A typical 100W lightbulb can be replaced by a 23W energy efficient (compact fluorescent) lightbulb. If we consider 1,000 such lightbulbs:
1. The energy consumed by 1,000 CFLs is 1,000 x 23W = 23,000W = 23 kW 2. With 51+ million kWh at our disposal (theoretically), for how long could the 1,000 lightbulbs be kept on? 51,480,000 kWh / 23kW = 2,238,260 hours = 93,260 days = 255.5 years Cost savings 51,480,000 kWh x $0.10/kWh = $5,148,000 A modern flat panel monitor uses about 30 Watts when on. The power consumption of about three monitors equate to that of a workstation.

o How about 2 trash cans recyclables and trash. I use them in my main bath room and in my living area. So papers and stuff make it to the recyle center
o Windows 2 blinds The first one near the window can reflect back the suns rays and absorb heat. It can be blinds or a thick hanging curtain. The last one is light color facing out of house and can be light fabric. The last one reflects heat back out and keeps the heat near window out of house. I notice a huge difference around my sliders.
o Reuse plastic bags EWW! I often will reuse a nice ziplock when it really wasn’t dirty. For example I will put it in my back pack for non food item storage. Sometimes I will carry a ziplock when it may rain. WHY? Heck my cell and wallet dont need to get soaked it I get caught in rain!
o Katrina had another tragedy that was catistropic and is impacting the world right now!!
After Katrina outside of New Orleans the Greatest forestry disaster on US soil happened. Over 320 million trees were either blown down or killed by salt water. This forest is decaying now and 105 million metric tons will be released into the atmosphere this year. This amount of output is as much as all the forests of the world can absorb in a year.

Thats enough to save $150+ & not strain AC/heater playing catch up. WHEN you leave for few days turn it off or 6-8 degrees outside of norm until you return. Summer I set it @ 84 when im away and the It comes back on the day I return!!

Turn on and off when need it cleaning the dishes, Fill up a pan or glass with sudds/water, get a scrub brush and just clean clean away. You dont need to run water that way.
